Staten Island Republican Michael Grimm doesn't seem spooked by the Democrats' campaign against Medicare. In an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box earlier today, he showed no sign of backing down on the plan he voted for:
The congressman corrects fellow guest Jared Bernstein, formerly chief economist for Vice President Biden, when Bernstein claims that the reforms authored by Budget chairman Paul Ryan take away the guaranteed Medicare coverage. It's worth noting that Grimm is a freshman and one of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's top targets for 2012. Perhaps the Ryan plan isn't as radioactive as Democrats think.
Also, at about 3:20 in the video above, Bernstein says that it's "underappreciated" that Obamacare actually cuts $500 billion from Medicare. This is a point Republicans made throughout the debate on Obamacare and during the 2010 elections. What's remarkable is that a former Obama administration adviser is making the same point.
