Jay Dardenne, Louisiana's Republican lieutenant governor, says he won't be running for the Senate against Democrat Mary Landrieu next year.
"I'm not going to run for the U.S. Senate," he told LaPolitics.com. "This fell in my lap. I didn't go out looking for it. So I'm not going to prolong the question any longer. I love what I'm doing and I will continue to do that for the balance of my term."
Dardenne said in a recent interview with THE WEEKLY STANDARD that he's focused on the governor's race in 2015, which seems consistent with his statement declining to run for the Senate. A poll had shown Dardenne with the closest chance among potential Republican challengers to defeating Landrieu.
Potential Republican candidates for the Senate next year include House members John Fleming and Bill Cassidy.
