"Secretary Hagel spoke by phone this evening with Chinese Minister of National Defense General Chang Wanquan to congratulate him on his new position, an official readout of the conversation states.
"The leaders both expressed their intention to work together to continue to build a military to military relationship that serves the vision of both President Obama and President Xi.
"The secretary discussed the importance of focusing on areas of sustained dialogue, practical areas of cooperation, and risk reducing measures.
"The secretary emphasized the growing threat to the U.S. and our allies posed by North Korea's aggressive pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs and expressed to General Chang the importance of sustained U.S.-China dialogue and cooperation on these issues.
"Secretary Hagel said he looks forward to hearing the results of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Marty Dempsey's trip to China later this month and invited General Chang to visit the United States later this year to continue senior level military to military consultations."
