The American Press of Louisiana reports:
Calcasieu Parish Superintendent of Schools Wayne Savoy announced Monday morning that all public schools in the parish would be closed Tuesday due to "excessive employee absences."
Teachers will be traveling to Baton Rouge to protest pending legislation regarding public education and express their opinions on the voucher system and tenure laws that was approved by the state House last week.
This isn't the first time Louisiana teachers have canceled class to protest education reforms. Earlier this month at least three school districts did the same thing.
And it's getting uglier.
Orleans parish school board president Thomas Robichaux told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that "The modern Republican party is very fascist-oriented. ... It's modern fascism -- corporations taking over the government." And Democratic state representative Sam Jones likened Governor Bobby Jindal to a Nazi. "[T]he brownshirts of the 1930s," Jones said on the state house floor.
