The top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, said over the weekend that opposition to the nomination of Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense is "intensifying." The second highest ranking Republican in the Senate, John Cornyn of Texas, has been leading the charge against Hagel.
"Senator Hagel did not do a very good job before the Armed Services Committee this week," said McConnell to reporters. "I think the opposition to him is intensifying. Whether that means he will end up having to achieve 60 votes or 51 is not clear yet."
McConnell himself hasn't said where he stands on the Hagel nomination.
