Senator Charles Schumer has discovered a new cash crop that requires taxpayer support. As Pete Kasperowicz writes in the Hill:
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday proposed a new federal grant program aimed at encouraging the development of maple syrup production on privately held land, including land in upstate New York.
And why not? We spend lots of money on corn that is made into ethanol that is put in cars to no particular good end except to make the people growing the corn and distilling the alcohol a lot richer than they would be and food prices higher than the should be.
So why shouldn't upstate New York farmers be paid to harvest maple syrup? It is only money, and our Chinese friends will surely loan us some.
