Stuart Rothenberg warns that the Republicans may be in for a long stretch of desert wandering as a result of its losing the "youth vote." Mr. Rothenberg works the numbers and they pretty much confirm what we all know. Young people favored Obama by a wide margin in 2008 and one that was a little more narrow last time around.
And perhaps it will become a habit. But voters do respond to incentives – positive and negative – and a recent Harvard study,
... on Americans under 30, the so-called Millennials, shows that the economy is having a crushing impact, with just 62 percent working, and of those, half are toiling at part-time jobs.
Many of these people took on heavy debt to finance college educations which have not led to the kind of jobs they were led to expect would be available to them. But while they have not gotten the jobs, they most certainly have kept the debts.
They might, one thinks, start changing the way they vote out of self-interest.
Or simply to get even.
