Yes, he is a marginal figure even within his own party, and yes he's announced he's retiring in 2010 and will not seek another term, but this al Jazeera interview with Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) is another reminder that what anti-Israel sentiment exists in Congress is confined largely to the Democratic side of the aisle. Go to about 2:40 to hear Baird say that "there will be a cost in dollars, aid, in support, if some fundamental changes don't happen." The fundamental change Baird wants is for Israelis to lift the blockade on Gaza. Why he's not threatening to cut aid to Egypt, which has also sealed its border with Gaza, well, one could speculate. In any case, Baird shouldn't hold his breath. Contradictory reports out of Israel seem to indicate more trouble in the negotiations over the release of Gilad Shalit, and until Shalit gets out of Gaza, there's no way the Israelis are going to open those borders.
