When the cops finally raided the now-convicted killer’s house, he wasn’t particularly disturbed by the intrusion. In fact, he warned police not to go in the basement. Eventually, one of them put on a Tyvek jumpsuit and descended downstairs. The basement was mostly empty, but the flea infestation was so bad the officer’s shoes and pants turned black from the swarm that descended on him. The house was cluttered and full of spoiled food, though it contained several expensive appliances, including an autoclave machine, used to sterilize medical instruments.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards held a small rally outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday joined by Minnesota senator Al Franken, Connecticut congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, and a crowd of 200 Planned Parenthood activists. Richards warned that new state and federal bills--including measures establishing late-term abortion limits--pose threats to women's rights.

By most accounts, Kermit Gosnell seemed stunned last week when a jury found him guilty of three counts of first-degree murder in what seemed to have been his routine killings of newborn babies at his abortion clinic in Philadelphia; he thought he was doing his job. Abortion is legal and is a much-touted right. The president recently lavished praise on Planned Parenthood, a lobbyist for which had testified to Florida legislators in March that an infant born alive in the course of an abortion might be left to die anyhow.
