Hollywood Gore
October 12, 2007 • By Matthew Continetti

Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize will fuel unfounded - to date - speculation that he may jump into the presidential race. The latest I've heard comes from Tim Russert on the Today Show. Russert said Gore was not going to run unless the Democratic nominee were "incapacitated" for some reason next spring. Translation: Gore 2008 probably won't happen.

You have to wonder, though, what may happen if January 1 rolls around and Obama and Edwards still haven't gained any ground on Clinton. If that's the case, there may be more than a few Democrats who will be seriously worried about Clinton's chances in a general election. And they may think about turning to the Hollywood megastar and Nobel laureate in their midst.

Of course, as this story suggests, Gore's prize has little to do with science - or peace - and everything to do with politics, the new politics of celebrity in particular.
