Hayes: More on Bernie and Rudy
November 12, 2007 • By Stephen F. Hayes

Interesting comments from Rudy Giuliani to ABC News. In an interview with ABC's Jake Tapper, who has a knack of getting people to say things that are more revealing than his subjects probably intend, Giuliani defended the performance of former NYPD commissioner Bernard Kerik. "You know, people are complex," Giuliani said. "But the fact is that the results for the city of New York were excellent results." He added: "It's the complexity of human life and the reality of human life. Richard Nixon had this very serious problem, but was his breakthrough with China one of the historic things that happened in the 20th century? Can't take that away from him - "

It's an interesting - almost Clintonian - argument: Don't judge the man, judge the performance. It's an argument Giuliani has made before. And as his private life receives additional scrutiny over the next two months - and it will - we will probably hear this line again.
