| Weekly Standard Video: Michael Steele |
|
The Washington Post reports today that African American Republicans are frustrated by the lack of minorities showcased in the Republican Convention this week, and in the party in general:
Former Maryland lieutenant governor and current president of GOPAC Michael Steele told the Post, "It's hard to look around and not get frustrated." Still, when I caught up with him in St. Paul this morning, he was optimistic that we'll see more minorities in the future. "I would love to have seen a greater role for minorities on the platform in terms of speaking, and sort of showing the true face of our party," he told me, "It will come." He is also confident about the GOP's prospects, especially with Sarah Palin on the ticket. Watch part of our conversation here:

| Weekly Standard Video: Sarah Palin Feminism |
|
Today Gloria Steinem criticizes Sarah Palin, writing that she “opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality.” Steinem believes that McCain's selection of Palin "is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters." But other women disagree. Steinem forgot, of course, about conservative women--such as Laura Ingraham, who touted Palin's "new feminism" at a National Coalition for Life event in St. Paul. Ingraham said that Palin's brand of conservative feminism will terrify liberal elites. Palin is a smart, tough, fearless woman who still embraces pro-life, pro-family values, and is radiantly feminine too. In short, she'll get things done. Steinem also forgot about feminist women who will be turned off by the sexist attacks on Palin with regards to her ability to properly raise her children and serve as vice president, or by Harry Reid's spokesman calling Palin's speech "shrill." Yesterday I spoke with Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, which raises funds for pro-life female candidates. She is confident that many women will support Sarah Palin, and describes the McCain-Palin ticket as "the dream team." Watch a bit of our conversation here:

| Weekly Standard Video: Congressman Kevin McCarthy |
|
Yesterday in St. Paul, Republican National Convention platform chair Congressman Kevin McCarthy presented the official GOP platform, which was created with input from thousands of Americans. Kevin McCarthy is a freshman congressman from Bakersfield, California. Last year, I profiled him in THE WEEKLY STANDARD as part of the "Young Guns of the House GOP" package, which also featured congressmen Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor. After his speech on the convention floor, I caught up with him in the Xcel Center:
By the way, Catherine and I would like to thank Reason.tv's Dan Hayes and the Examiner's Mary Katharine Ham for their much-needed help and advice on all things web video.

THE WEEKLY STANDARD now has a YouTube Channel! We'll also post our videos here on the blog. My director/camerawoman Catherine Daniel and I met some Republican delegates yesterday as they entered the Xcel Center for Day 1 of the Republican National Convention:
