I happened to read Michael Connelly's first mystery, The Black Echo, when it was published twenty years ago. I've been a fan every since. His books are now bestsellers, but it's always a nice feeling to have discovered someone (or something) before everyone else did—even if one deserves no particular credit for it.

All Hail Hieronymus

In any case, there's an interesting interview with Connelly in today's Wall Street Journal, in which he discusses how his signature character, homicide detective Heironymus "Harry" Bosch, has changed over the years. Connelly says Bosch has become less dark and dour; I think he may have become less interesting. But I'm still very much looking forward to the 18th Bosch book, The Black Box, out next week.
