On Friday, at noon, U.N. negotiators revealed the final text of the Durban III declaration that will be adopted by all heads of state attending the "anti-racism" event in New York on September 22, 2011.

The most contentious issue over two months of debate was the status of the original Durban Declaration and the "reaffirmation" of the whole of its political message, including its anti-Israel agenda. In the end, Islamic states, together with South Africa and other developing world countries, held firm while Western states capitulated. Among other things, the final document now reads: "We heads of state and government...reaffirm our political commitment to the full and effective implementation of the Durban Declaration..."

It remains to be seen whether the result prompts more countries to follow the ten states that have already pulled out.
