A new internal poll of the Georgia Republican primary for U.S. Senate finds David Perdue, Karen Handel, and Jack Kingston all within a few points of each other. The poll conducted by Rosetta Stone Communications on behalf of the Handel campaign, found Perdue leading the pack with 22 percent support, with Handel just behind at 20 percent and Kingston in a close third at 18 percent. Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey round out the poll with 11 percent and 7 percent support, respectively.
The poll is the latest to show the May 20 primary as a three-way race among Perdue, Handel, and Kingston. Because there are 5 major candidates vying for the nomination, no one is expected to win the required 50 percent support next Tuesday to avoid a runoff. The top two candidates will continue on to the July 22 runoff election.
The eventual GOP nominee is likely to face Democrat Michelle Nunn in the general election. Incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss is retiring at the end of this term.
