Mark Jacobs, a Republican candidate for Senate in Iowa, has donated more of his own money to his campaign than any candidate in Hawkeye State history. The Des Moines Register's Jennifer Jacobs (no relation) has the story:
The Register goes on to point to both Republican and Democratic self-funders who have lost statewide races. Jacobs told the paper that his personal investment shows he's "committed to running the type of campaign it takes that's not only going to be a success in the June 3 primary but also in the Nov. 4 general election."
Jacobs's chief opponent in the Republican primary is Joni Ernst, a state senator and Iraq War veteran. According to Real Clear Politics, Ernst has a marginal lead over Jacobs ahead of the June 3 primary. Both are vying for the chance to take on Democratic congressman Bruce Braley, who is hoping to succeed his fellow Democrat Tom Harkin in the Senate.
