Pelosi Stops Talking About Abortion

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi ripped Republicans for not spending enough money on food stamps. "They're taking food out of the mouths of babies," Pelosi said of her Republican colleagues following the defeat of the farm bill in a floor vote. "Two million families would lose their food under the bill, much less under the Southerland amendment."
But what Pelosi didn't say was more interesting than what she did say.
Two days after the House passed a bill prohibiting most abortions during the final four months of pregnancy, Pelosi didn't say a single word about abortion, the "war on women," or "reproductive rights." When a reporter tried to ask Pelosi a question related to the late-term abortion bill this afternoon, Pelosi said she only wanted questions about the budget.
"No," Pelosi said as Elizabeth Harrington of CNS News began to speak up. "Does anyone else--I want a [question on the] subject of the budget."
Harrington hadn't even mentioned the topic of her question when Pelosi cut her off, but the minority leader likely knew what was coming because Harrington had stumped Rep. Diana DeGette, co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, with a question about late-term abortion on Tuesday.
One week ago, the day after the House judiciary committee passed the bill limiting late-term abortions, Pelosi attacked the measure during opening remarks at her Thursday press conference. But when asked persistently by THE WEEKLY STANDARD to explain the difference between what the bill intended to ban and the killings carried out by Kermit Gosnell, Pelosi didn't have an answer. "As the mother of five children," Pelosi said, "as a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me." When a New York Times reporter asked to return to the issue of abortion later in the same press conference, Pelosi rebuffed him. "I'm not going to. What else?" she said.
"Pelosi hid behind the skirt of her own bassinet," wrote Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker. One week later, Pelosi is still hiding her position on late-term abortion from the public.
