Texas governor Rick Perry, a former Republican presidential candidate, has endorsed former Vets for Freedom director Pete Hegseth for Senate in Minnesota.

"He's exactly the kind of patriot we need," Perry says in a video message posted on Hegseth's website. "He's not afraid of a fight. Regardless of what's popular or expedient, Pete Hegseth fights for what's right and does so with conviction."

Perry's endorsement comes just days before the Minnesota Republican party's state convention in St. Cloud, where Hegseth is being challenged for the GOP nomination for Senate by state representative Kurt Bills. Bills has received support from another Texan presidential contender, congressman Ron Paul, and is also heavily backed by Paul's political operation in Minnesota.

Hegseth and Bills are both vying to take on first-term Democratic-Farmer-Labor senator Amy Klobuchar in November.
